Our vision is to create a program that addresses the pressing issue of hunger among elderly community members living in or near poverty. With a focus on the Sun Lakes Community and surrounding retirement communities, we aim to provide essential nourishment and support to those in need.
According to the National Council on Aging, the poverty rate among Americans aged 65 and older has increased from 10.7% in 2021 to 14.1% in 2022, affecting more than 2,096 seniors in our communities alone. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for action.
Since our 501c3 approval in November 2023, our immediate goal has been to establish partnerships with local food banks and commence operations in the Sun Lakes Community. By March 2024, we aim to have these partnerships in place, pending responses from potential partners.
In our first year of operation, we plan to establish a minimum of two and ideally five distribution points within the Sun Lakes Communities, extending our reach to the SunBird Retirement Community and other retirement communities along Riggs Road.
In the second year, we aim to expand our operations to include the Sun City Retirement Community and other nearby retirement communities. By the third year, our goal is to further expand to the Mesa Legacy Community and its surrounding areas.
This program addresses a national problem, and we aspire to be at the forefront of finding sustainable solutions. The potential for growth is vast, considering the worsening national statistics. We envision our program expanding to a national level, focusing on providing nourishment and support to the elderly, who are often forgotten.
Together, we can make a meaningful impact and ensure that no elderly community member goes hungry or lacks the support they need to live with dignity and security.
